Collection: Secrets of El Yunque - Rio Sabana River and Trail

EYNF was created by the respect the Indians (called Tainos) had for it - a home of the Gods for them. Then Spain respected it too, and the US came in 1898 and preserved it too and made it part of the new US National Parks. Now the main road that crosses EYNF built in the 1940's eventually split in two parts due to a huge landslide and natural swamp.

The USFS wisely decided to leave it alone and let nature recover a large section of the road after the last gate in PR 191 near Mt Britton loop. On the other side it became the Rio Sabana Park managed by the local govt of Naguabo. Its main trail is marvelous and crosses the very center of the forest until it connects to Tradewinds trail. It has two main rivers - Rio Sabana and Cubuy, which merge into Rio Blanco - both subject to frequent flash floods.
