In 1895, an attraction to the sacred hill of Arunachala \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eand the 63 Nayanars (statues of saints in a local temple) was aroused in him, and in 1896, at the age of 16, \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ehe had a \"death-experience\" where he became aware of a \"current\" or \"force\" (avesam) which he recognized \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eas his true \"I\" or \"self\", which he later identified with \"the personal God, or Iswara\" or Shiva. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis realization he usually simply called the Self, the center of all life and beings, or deep stillness or consciousness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis resulted in a state that he later described as \"the state of mind of Iswara or the jnani\". \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSix weeks later he left his uncle's home in Madurai, and journeyed alone to the holy mountain of Arunachala, \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ein Tiruvannamalai, where he took on the role of a sannyasin and remained there for the rest of his life.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eInitially he maintained Silence for about 2 years, due to the elevated states of mind he was experiencing.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eHe also moved for some years to nearby caves to enable deeper concentration and solitude.
