-- THE IMAGES --

El Yunque Rainforest — Puerto Rico

Deep within the mountains of Puerto Rico lies El Yunque, a rainforest protected for centuries and home to one of the most vibrant ecosystems in the Caribbean.

The Collection: This is a set of 6 related Premium Wooden Framed Posters meant to be arranged in the certain order. TC means Top Center etc. and BC means Bottom center, the others are left side of the center print. Some may be available separately.

In this collection - the Rio Espiritu Santo (Holy Spirit River) - a pristine Federal Wilderness - is documented before Hurricane Maria in 2017. We Focus here on how the river starts in the deep forest between El Yunque peak and Tradewinds Trail.

Some details about this forest , the river and the whole collection:

Many images of the stream have an orange tinge - that is due to organic compounds in the river from smaller streams in contact with organic decay or leaves, branches and trees. This forest is a Ying/Yang phenomenon of balance between life and death (decay).  Humidity here is about 100% the whole day!

The sand which is visible on the river is actually an underground river which comes in and out of the huge boulders, has been moved slowly to the coast (i.e.: Luquillo beach)  over millions of years, and created a marvelous coastline near El Yunque. There are many other images of the details of this exploration - classified as the canopy, decay,  little ones, bromeliads, Fern Palms and Sierra Palm.

The Classic Nature Painters in El Yunque?

A unique feature of the entire collection of images is the careful application of AI and a new machine learning method that learns from the works of classic painters like Van Gogh, Rosseau and Picasso, and then applies this to our images.  Here I match the painters style to the specific image. What we did not expect is that some of these nature painters act as wise filters that simplify the images and makes many details of them far more visible - else the thick forest would hide them! It is like they came to El Yunque and painted the scenes...

Before and After Hurricane Maria in 2017 - Historic Images:

These photographs were taken by Raul Garcia with a Cannon Rebel XSI  (12.2 MP and Image size: 4272 × 2848)  in 2013 before Hurricane Maria decimated the entire forest and Island of PR in 2017 with winds exceeding 100 MPH - capturing the forest’s intricate textures—leaves, roots, rivers, moss, and light.  This collection has over 740 images of this region/time and over 20 photographic expeditions.

Between 2013 and 2020, many regions of El Yunque National Forest were explored repeatedly by Raul in search of these hidden scenes. The images come from demanding and dangerous explorations through dense vegetation, often far from established trails and under constant rain, mud, and challenging terrain.

Because the canopy above was extremely dense before Maria, much of the rainforest existed then in a deep shadow, fog  and clouds. Using modern AI-assisted image enhancement, these photographs reveal subtle structures and details that are often difficult to perceive within the natural darkness of the forest.  Before AI it was impossible to achieve such an improvement of the image contents.

Together they offer a glimpse into the quiet, living architecture of one of the most remarkable rainforests on Earth.
