El Yunque Rainforest — Puerto Rico

Deep within the mountains of Puerto Rico lies El Yunque, a rainforest protected for centuries and home to one of the most vibrant ecosystems in the Caribbean.

These photographs were taken by Raul Garcia with a 45-megapixel Nikon D850, capturing the forest’s intricate textures—leaves, roots, rivers, moss, and light. 

Between 2013 and 2020, many regions of El Yunque National Forest were explored repeatedly in search of these hidden scenes. The images come from demanding journeys through dense vegetation, often far from established trails and under constant rain, mud, and challenging terrain.

Because the canopy above is extremely dense, much of the rainforest exists in deep shadow. Using modern AI-assisted image enhancement, these photographs reveal subtle structures and details that are often difficult to perceive within the natural darkness of the forest.

These images are from a 21 day exploration of the deep forest and the Holy Spirit river complex of streams. These were converted to the famous nature painter Henri Rosseau style - which simplify what is a very complex nature image.
